On this Dependence Day
We are thankful for the broligarchs,
Who throw our bold parades
And light the sky
With bombs, brighter
Than any fireworks display.
On this Dependence Day
We look back on the wars
Fought to give them success
Money, power, and prestige,
Not thinking that the rest
Of humanity has lost.
On this Dependence Day,
We frighten dogs and children,
The soldiers who survived,
If not in mind, in body,
Strike the incessant beats
Of warring drums.
On this Dependence Day,
We stop to wonder why
We have let this go so far,
In the name of a democracy
That struggles at the door
Of ultimate collapse.
On this Dependence Day,
We celebrate our freedom,
Where the poor and the displaced,
Parsed by race and religion
No longer have a home,
No future, nor a past.

If you like my work, please Buy Me a Coffee I post all my poems currently without a paywall, so that everyone could read and comment. I write to communicate, and connect, and hopefully spread compassion. I sense that we all need encouragement these days, especially the “least” among us.
Some of you donate to my work as paid subscribers ($5/month or $30/year) and I sincerely appreciate your support. This is a great help to me, making it possible for me to continue writing and extend beyond the poems into future music efforts.
Thank you to all who take the time to read and connect.
