Poem from a Dream

I swallowed them whole,
the words that I had spoken,
though they were tied by a string,
I could not extract them.
They had done their damage
and returned to me,
I choked on them
until I awakened.
Why did I speak them,
what was the need of it,
to hurt without a reason,
or just my tongue’s slip?
It never really mattered,
much better to have been mute,
than to see the life they shatter
with their relentless ruse.
They have often been repeated,
they cannot be removed,
As arrows to my soul reach,
I swallowed them whole.
