A Villanelle

Take in the truth,
Your world unfolds,
Innocent youth.
All you would do,
Wear it as a cloak,
Take in the truth.
One of the few,
Never grow old,
Innocent youth.
Surrender you,
Treasure ensouled,
Take in the truth.
Pure morning dew,
Finer than gold,
Innocent youth.
Be resolute,
Forever bold,
Take in the truth,
Innocent youth.
We are born into this world with open ears and eyes, yearning to learn. We see things rawly for the first time, and experience them directly.
Over time we learn to understand them, and each day brings new awareness. We begin to place things in categories, you and me, self and other, good and bad, safe and dangerous.
Through all this, we must protect our innocence, and our caregivers must do the same. Too often this is not what happens. “Real life” destroys what is Real within, steals the treasure from us, and replaces joy and awe in our souls with fear and distrust.
We spend the rest of our lives trying to return to this lost innocence. The irony is that we can only find it going forward, never back.
A very good place to start is to seek every day to find “awe” in our common lives through moral beauty, spirituality, nature, music, and togetherness. Over time, this awareness may lift us to a place of courage to reclaim our innocence in a difficult world.
