Today
Just sets me back to zero
A poetic reality check

Today did not begin so well, and may not finish better.
I fear
that I may miss the bell,
or even go back
further.
But then,
I might soon find myself
the victim of their
mercy.
For they
will surely fail to see,
or even feel my
worry.
Suffice
to say, I have a case
to care for this
myself.
For trust
is something slowly learned,
few ever sense it
heartfelt.
Some days
though I do fight to win,
it sets me back to
zero.
So I
must wait for what will come,
so they might call me
hero.
Who wants to depend on anyone else in this economy and culture?
And yet, the strength of humanity has always been our ability to bond and work together.
So we have choices to make:
go it alone, and ultimately resist our interdependent needs, branding them weakness and co-dependency, or
finally recognize our basic right to exist together, contribute to our communities, and trust that others will do the same.
Too many wait until it is too late, and then proclaim both the victims and their rescuers heroes in a situation where no one actually wins.
The true heroes are those who fight through the bad days just to get to zero.
